What is included in WP 6.1?

Easily manage menus
The new restore options in the navigation block mean you can edit the menu you have opened; no need to search. In addition, the controls for selecting and editing menus have been given their own place in the block settings. The mobile menu system also gets an update, with new features including different icon options to make the menu really yours.

When locking blocks, a new option allows you to apply the lock settings to all blocks in a containing block, for example group, cover and column blocks.

Different blocks contain better placeholders that reflect customization options to help you design your site and its content. The Image block placeholder, for example, displays custom frames and duotone filters before the image is selected.
Compiling richer lists and quotes with internal blocks
List and quote blocks now support internal blocks, allowing for more flexible and richer compositions, such as adding headings within quote blocks.
More sensitive text with liquid typography
Liquid typography allows you to define font sizes that adapt to any screen size for easy readability.
Add starter samples to any post type
In WordPress 6.0, when you created a new page, you saw suggested templates so you didn't have to start with a blank page. Also in 6.1, the starter samples module appears when you create a new instance of any post type.
Find block topics faster
In the Theme Library, there is a filter for block themes, and the sample preview gives you a better idea of what the theme might look like when exploring different themes and samples.
Keep Site Editor settings for later use
Website editor settings are now permanent for each user . This means that settings will now be consistent across browsers and devices.
Simplified style system
For CSS rules on margins, padding, typography, colours and borders, see styles engine can now be found in one place, which reduces the time spent on layout-specific tasks and helps to create semantic class names.
Updated interface options and features
Updates include styling style elements global display of buttons, quotes and links; control of floating, active and focused state of links via theme.json (not yet available in the interface); and customization of outline support for blocks and elements, among others.
Continuous development of layout options
The default content sizes provided by themes can now be overridden in the Styles sidebar, giving site builders more control over full-width content. Developers can finer control over controls .
Block template sections on classic themes
Block template parts can now be defined in classic themes by adding the appropriate `parts` directory of HTML files to the root of the theme.
Extended support for Query Loop blocks
The new filters allow Query Block variations to support custom queries for more robust variations and advanced hierarchical post filtering capabilities.
Filters for all styles
Use the Styles sidebar filters to control settings at all four levels of the website - core, theme, user or block - from the less specific to the more specific.
Spacing / Spacing settings for faster, consistent planning
Save time and avoid hard-coding values in the topic with preset margin and padding values for multiple blocks.
Content-only editing support for container blocks
Thanks to content-only editing options, layouts can be locked within container blocks. In a content-only block, child blocks are invisible to the list view and are completely uneditable. So you can control the layout while writers can focus on the content. Combine this with block locking options to get even more advanced control over your blocks.
Other points of interest
- 6.1 includes a new reading time feature that shows content authors the approximate reading time of pages, posts and custom post types.
- For new websites the site header is empty by default, but can be changed in the General settings.
- The new modal design offers a blurred background effect, making it easier to focus on the task at hand.
